Lately, I have been giving a lot of thought as to how COVID-19 has affected us all over the last month. Recently, I heard someone talking about concussions and the devastating effects they can have on a person’s brain. It struck me that the experience a person goes through after sustaining a head injury may be the perfect analogy for describing what we may all be experiencing in dealing with the aftermath of COVID-19. The world seems to be suffering from a sort of a metaphorical, concussion, right now. We have had our “bell rung” by something we don’t understand or comprehend. In short, “we don’t know what hit us”. At this point, we are dealing with the residual symptoms that are confusing and that are causing us strange problems. Worse, like those suffering from real concussions, we know we have these signs and symptoms, but we don’t understand why, and worse, we don’t know when they will end. Normal injuries to the body, like broken bones, torn ligaments, etc…are fairly straightforward and the path to recovery is fairly easy to predict. Unfortunately, with injuries to the brain, the journey is much more difficult. Concussion victims are forced to patiently wait for things to return to normal and they have to accept that they cannot control the narrative. As anyone suffering from a serious concussion will tell you, this uncertainty creates a low level of fear and stress that takes over your life. I believe this is similar to the experience that we are all having in dealing with the coronavirus pandemic.
So, why is this important? Our jobs as therapists and trainers are obviously aimed at caring for our client’s bodies but, at Lone Peak, we have always stressed that our jobs are much bigger than that. We know that to provide truly great service, we also need to constantly be offering care for our client’s minds and spirits, as well. Right now, more than ever, we know that we need to be shifting our priorities to caring for our clients’ mental health. All of us, providers and clients, need to come together to support each other as we slowly heal from our “concussion”.
What are we doing about it at Lone Peak PT?
We want to connect with you for all the reasons listed above. Human beings crave interaction with others and, right now, that is harder than ever to find. In short, we miss you, our valuable clients, and we want to be able to engage with you. During this time of social distancing, we are working hard to find creative ways to connect. To that end, we have recently developed our virtual platform, allowing us to offer therapy and personal training sessions online, in the comfort of your home. In light of this pandemic, many insurances have now started covering these online Telehealth services, so you do not need to miss out on valuable time with your therapist or trainer. If you own a smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera and internet, it is simple to get set up. Please call us today and we can walk you through the process. If you are still unsure about how this all works, we are happy to offer you a complimentary virtual session, so you can give it a try before making your final decision.
The bottom line is, relationship, support, connection, and love are the way to fight off the harmful symptoms caused by COVID-19. Please, take the time each day to:
- Focus on others
- Be thankful
- Find a way to make someone else feel special
- To move your body
Keep your body, mind, and spirit healthy and help those around you to do the same.
Be well,
JB
