Dr. Susanna Clark Discusses Intimacy after a Hip Replacement with GoodRX

Dr. Susanna Clark, DPT, a physical therapist at our Helena Clinic, emphasized the importance of taking precautions to avoid complications like hip dislocation after surgery. As a ball-and-socket joint, the hip can be vulnerable to dislocation if it moves too far or twists before it’s fully healed. She warned against resuming sexual activity too soon, as it could also reopen surgical incisions, leading to infection or delayed healing.

Clark strongly recommended starting with safe, low-pressure positions like missionary, where the person who underwent surgery is on their back, or side-lying, with the surgical hip supported by pillows to prevent crossing the body’s midline. She emphasized the need to strictly avoid positions that involve deep hip flexion, overextension, or excessive rotation, such as being on hands and knees or lying on the stomach, to prevent any complications.

For a safe return to intimacy, Clark advised communication with your partner, using support like pillows, and paying close attention to any discomfort or pain. These strategies, combined with guidance from healthcare providers, can help ensure a smooth transition after hip replacement surgery.
